Georgia Aquarium

Educated, caring stewards of the ocean are more important than ever but it is a very small percentage of people who would ever have an opportunity to see the underwater world in person. Public aquariums offer a glimpse and help to create advocates for ocean conservation. Bruce Carlson, Chief Science officer at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, also serves as chief underwater videographer for the Aquarium. His contribution of scenes from the Georgia Aquarium give us a rare glimpse of both the interesting inhabitants of the tanks and behind-the-scenes activities such as the work involved to build a new reef exhibit.

Bruce Carlson has been scuba diving since 1967 and took up underwater photography in 1972 with a Canon SLR in the first version of the Ikelite housing.  He took up videography in 1996. Bruce joined the Peace Corp in 1972 and spent nearly four years in Fiji before moving to Hawaii. His professional training is in ichthyology and he has published numerous papers on a variety of animals including chambered nautilus, corals and several new species of reef fishes.  From 1976 to 2001 he worked at the Waikiki Aquarium where he served as Director. In 2001 he joined the design team for the new Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta where he currently serves as the Chief Science Officer.
