A Lateral Line
Bill
Fisher and Joe Romeiro say “It’s hard to deny the
attraction of sharks, and even harder to try and change
the negative attitudes so many people have about them.”
Their feature, “A Lateral Line” features footage of
the beautiful Blue Shark, a sleek, nomadic species that
makes one of the longest known migration journeys – up to
1800 miles! They are often found in aggregations and are
voracious feeders. The blue shark is one of the
shark species found as bycatch in pelagic longline
fisheries, which has made it easy to exploit them for the
international shark fin trade. This footage was shot at
numerous locations, predominantly in New England,
California, Mexico, and South America.

Sharks have fascinated both Joe Romeiro and Bill Fisher
since childhood. They learned to dive as a tool to get
closer to them and experience their power and mystery
first hand. After meeting on a dive expedition in Fiji,
Joe and Bill teamed up to produce films that help aid in
the conservation of sharks and the marine
environment. They portray sharks the way they see them,
not as mindless killing machines, but as an important and
critical element of our oceans eco-system. More
importantly, they want to use their experiences to help
show others that many sharks are threatened, and some even
face extinction. In 2009, their short film “Death Of A
Deity” won the EMERGING UNDERWATER FILM MAKER award at the
inaugural BLUE Ocean Film Festival in Savannah, Georgia. |
