Piece Title

On the afternoon of July 12, 2005 divers from ReefNet busy documenting marine life off the island of St. Vincent were treated to a rare show: a large colony of Christmas tree worms began to spawn. The worms immediately took center stage and the cameras closed in to capture the detail of the remarkable (and rarely seen) behavior. For a few precious minutes, each worm became a chimney, spewing its gametes into the water where they gently mixed. As the wispy clouds drifted over the reef, they spurred even more worms to spawn until the entire colony was participating.

"Christmas in July" relives the event with stunning super-macro video and photos. You'll never look at Christmas tree worms the same way!

Kris Wilk has been diving and capturing rare marine life encounters on film for nearly twenty years. In 1994 he established ReefNet Inc., specializing in software and electronic products for divers. As authors of ReefNet & New World Publications' "Reef Fish Identification - Interactive Edition", Kris and his family have explored the waters of the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific extensively in search of rare, unusual, or undescribed species. His unique library of first-ever footage (with a particular emphasis on super-macro subjects) has garnered the attention of both fishwatchers and ichthyologists. Above water, Kris enjoys teaching advanced fish ID classes, fostering his business and supporting REEF's Fish Survey Project and other initiatives. He lives near Toronto, Canada.
