Paul Humann, well-known co-author of marine life identification books, owned the first live-aboard dive boat in the Caribbean, the Cayman Diver. He also pioneered much of the diving in the Galapagos, including leading the first underwater explorations of the archipelagos’ northernmost islands of Darwin and Wolf. During those years, he honed his skills as an underwater photographer, building a portfolio of definitive portraits of marine species as well as magnificent wide-angle shots. Paul shares some of his favorites with us.

Paul started diving and taking underwater photographs in the early 60’s. By the late 60’s, several of his fish portraits were featured in Skin Diver Magazine’s Fish of the Month series. His work has appeared in many magazines and established visual identification criteria for many marine animals. In some cases they were the first ever published of those living species in their natural habitat.

In 1989, Paul teamed up with Ned DeLoach to publish their award-winning Reef Fish Identification: Florida, Caribbean, Bahamas. Their company, New World Publications has gone on to publish over twelve more marine life identification guides and has become the leader in marine life field guides.

In 1990, Paul co-founded REEF, the Reef Environmental Education Foundation, an organization of volunteer divers who collect marine species population data and maintains the world’s largest marine life database. He continues to serve as REEF’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Paul received the 2006 DEMA Reaching Out Award and in 2007 was inducted into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame.

A selection of his work appears on marinelifeimages.com
